After taking a very short ride from the hostel down to Mission Beach, with a quick stop at the beautiful jetty on the way, I was sitting on the rickshaw down by the ocean, waiting for my accommodation to open. After hearing a friendly whistle coming along, I befriended Kim - president of the Mission Beach Petanque Club. He kindly invite dme to come and speak to his group and play a game of petanque at 3pm. I gratefully accepted, happy to have made a friend when feeling so wrecked (though I didn't have the heart to tell him I had no idea what petanque actually was).
I spent the morning ferrying folks around the local market to fundraise for Lifeline, and then popped in Healthy Harvest where I met Maria and James. They helped me create my own protein powder mixture, as I have been struggling with gluten and dairy free nutrition on the road. They also put me in touch with a masseuse to get my tender right knee some R&R. It was like being welcomed into family!
The welcome continued with an absolutely brilliant afternoon at the Petanque Club, held outdoors in the most idyllic paradise beach location imaginable. Petanque, I learned, is what my family would call "bocce" or "boules". I have since learned these are the wrong names! As well as a whole bunch of fun playing, it was a double birthday in the group with kindred spirit Sal and local Jim having a joint birthday. I helped them celebrate by ferrying Sal in the rickshaw down the pub after the game.
There, I was showered with kindnesses. Someone brought me fresh aloe vera for my blistering skin, another kind soul gave me a whole tube of aloe gel. Sal and Kim did a collection and donated the Petanque Club's takings for the day to Lifeline, and several others donated individually. Bernie, the owner of the Fish Pub, insisted I return for breakfast "And don't muck me around."
On the way out, John from the pub across the road offered me a half day whitewater rafting adventure. So kind! I sadly couldn't accept the rafting adventure as I needed to keep going, but it was just so lovely!
